The bell tower of the Messina cathedral contains within itthe largest and most complex mechanical and astronomical clock in the world. Designed by the Ungerer firm of Strasbourg, it was inaugurated in 1933 and is still the main attraction of the city today. At 12.00 a complex system of levers and counterweights allows the movement of the bronze automaton statues found on the facade and which are linked to the civil and religious traditions of the city
The protometropolitan cathedral basilica of Santa Maria Assunta ocathedral of Messina, is the mother church and cathedral of the archdiocese of Messina-Lipari-Santa Lucia del Mela. It stands in the historic center of Messina, with its façade and bell tower overlooking the large Piazza del Duomo. The bell tower houses the largest and most complex astronomical clock in the world.
In June 1947 Pope Pius XII elevated it to the dignity of a minor basilica. Inside there is the second largest pipe organ in all of Italy.
